Competition Success for Pentarq

Pentarq are delighted to be declared the winners of a competition to design a major new renewable energy hub proposed for Stromness.

The proposed development is on the site of the former secondary school, currently the campus for Heriot Watt University’s renowned International Centre for Island Technology.  The University and Highlands & Islands Enterprise ran the competition to progress interest in capitalising on Orkney’s renewable energy potential.

The sloping ground and its setting posed particular difficulties. The brief asked for a lot of space on a very limited area of site which was difficult to incorporate without impacting on the scale of the Stromness street pattern.  However, Mr Alan Gray and colleague, George Harper, developed a proposal that was described as both “imaginative and practical”.

The University, HIE and Orkney Islands Council are funding a project manager to progress the development and we look forward to seeing the design come to fruition.

Surveyors Success

We are delighted to announce the appointment of a new Chartered Valuation Surveyor based in our Thurso office.  Ruth Amos, MA (Hons), MSc, MRICS took up her post on 6 September 2010 having made the move from Clackmannanshire Council.  Ruth has extensive experience in commercial asset valuations including rent reviews and lease renewals.

Previously, with Savills Commercial Ltd, a well established multi discipline company based in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Ruth built up wide experience of commercial property investment, residential development appraisals and residential valuations for secured lending purposes.

We are also delighted to announce that Mark McGinn recently passed his Quantity Surveying Assessment of Professional Competence to become a full Chartered Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.  Based in the Kirkwall office, Mark is a valuable member of the surveying team at Pentarq having gained a wide experience of all surveying duties in the past 7 years.

Mark's success emulates Keith Rosie's achievement last year when he also passed his exams to become a Chartered Building Surveyor.  Keith is a key member of Pentarq's surveying team.  As well as traditional building surveying duties he also fulfills a CDM Co-ordinator role for a whole range of projects and is a qualifed energy assessor regularly carrying out energy assessments and reports for private clients.  ,

December 2009 - Exam Success

Alan Gray, Shane Scott and Adrian Howard recently sat exams to qualify as Registered Members of the Association of Project Safety and we are pleased to say that they were all successful. Pentarq recognise the importance of health and safety in construction, having invested heavily in both the training of our employees and the restructure of our Quality Management systems to reflect the need to have the provisions of CDM 2007 at the heart of the firm's activities.
